Eugene Gendlin, a renowned psychologist and philosopher, proposes the concept of “felt sense.” He describes it as follows:


“A felt sense is not a mental experience but a physical one. Physical. A bodily awareness of a situation or person, or event”


Here is how to apply this concept to release emotional barriers.


Step 1 – Name the Barrier You Feel


Engage in introspection to recognize which healing block is hindering your growth. Consider the ones we mentioned previously: persistence or refusal to feel, suppression of emotions, pessimism, mistrust of the process, self-loathing, and shame.


If you find it difficult to recognize your emotional barriers, use prompts like “What am I afraid to feel?” or “Which emotions or thoughts am I holding that obstruct healing?”


Step 2 – Locate the Barrier in the Body


Tune into your body and focus on where the sensation lives somatically. Scan your body to identify where it lives. Ask yourself, “Where do I feel tension in my body?” and bring your attention to that area.


Step 3 – Describe the Energetic Texture


Focus on the area in your body where the emotional barrier is located and try to determine how it feels. Identify colors, textures, temperatures, etc. Don’t think too much, avoid reasoning and conceptualization, and focus on bodily sensations. 


Step 4 – Breathe and Stay With It


Keep your attention fixed in that location. Breathe deeply to anchor yourself. If thoughts or distractions arise, let them go and return to your breathing and focus of attention. 


Step 5 – Ask the Energy What It Needs


Ask that sensation: “What do you need?” and allow intuitive insights to arise. This way, you will receive your answer. 


Invite divine guidance or light into the space of the sensation, as a healing power. Be patient with subtler or more abstract sensations, respecting their natural rhythm—the answers may take longer to appear.


Step 6 – Let Healing Unfold Naturally


Emotions have a natural cycle, and when you allow them to unfold and observe them through the lens of conscious awareness, they will leave naturally. Let go of control, be patient, and release them when they finish their process. 


The felt sense method works by harnessing the power of love and understanding. When you bring these subconscious patterns to loving awareness, they often dissolve.
